Kikipedia Your guide to the LGBTQ+ community!
About Us
What We Do
Here at Kikipedia, our goal is to help keep LGBTQ+ nightlife, safe spaces, and local drag alive and well. We have done this by creating a platform that lists local gay bars, clubs, and events in a way that is intended to be convenient, intuitive, accessible, and with minimal ads. Seriously, we can't stand how unusable so many websites and apps are these days- all because of ads. We also promise not to use AI for content generation; we hate seeing the web and environment polluted by AI slop.
Are you traveling and want to find a nearby gay bar for a drink? Visit our Nearby Bar Grid and enable your device's GPS. We do not store or share your location.
Are you home on a Saturday night and want to know what events are happening? Visit our Local Event List!
Do you want to watch RuPaul's Drag Race, but don't have cable? Check out our community-supported list of Viewing Parties!
If you don't see your favorite local gay bar or event listed, please let us know so that we can add it to our website. By doing so, you'll help create a more inclusive and informative resource that benefits everyone.
We encourage you to spread the word about Kikipedia to your local event organizers and bar staff. The more people know about us, the more comprehensive our resource can become. Together, we can build a more vibrant and inclusive LGBTQ+ community. Thank you for your support!
About the Team
We are currently a team of 2 that is based in the Boston, MA area. Kikipedia is not our full-time gig; we have day jobs that keep us busy.
Back in 2020
When the COVID pandemic started, we created a new section of the site to list Digital Drag shows (DragStreams.com),
we worked with Majenta With a J to create a directory of Drag Artists and LGBTQ+ Community Members in need of assistance (SupportDrag.com),
we worked with Just JP to create a simple Digital Drag Casting Call job board,
and we served as tech support for The Serve Network.
These features have since been sunset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an App? I couldn't find it in the App Store.
Kikipedia is a progressive web app, not a mobile native app. This means you can visit our site on a mobile browser and add it to your home screen where it will perform like a native app. You will not find it in any app store, as we do not have the bandwidth to publish to the various app stores and work around their restrictions and terms of service.
I was adding a venue/event and I got an error message saying the venue was not in range. What does this mean?
This means we do not have a coverage area close to the venue you entered. (See next response)
My city is not listed on Kikipedia! Can you add it?
We love you and we want to help, but keeping the site content up to date as we add more cities becomes exponentially more difficult. We are Boston-based, and that is where our community is. We want to keep our content relevant and our focus local on the New England area where we have connections. Other major cities often have their own location-specific platforms similar to ours that we cannot compete with for accuracy, resulting in a lot of wasted effort. So at this time, we are not accepting requests for new coverage areas.
Why does every event submission need to be approved?
We want to make sure our platform is well-curated, and any events listed have all the information necessary for attendees. Sometimes despite our layers of validation we get spam, low quality submissions, and other undesirable listings. For more information about our standards, see our guidelines on the event submission form.
I am trying to submit an event at a venue that is not listed on Kikipedia, but it is not allowing me to do so. What gives?
At this time, we at Kikipedia only have the bandwidth to maintain event listings for the Boston area and a few other Massachusetts locales. Our system was originally built as a resource for gay bars, and events at those bars were added on later as a coupled feature. Since events are heavily coupled to venues, and because LGBTQ-centric events do not always occur exclusively at LGBTQ-centric venues, we also need to maintain data for these unlisted venues. At this time, we do not have the bandwidth to rewrite code to decouple events and venues, so we have unfortunately had to disable event submissions at venues not yet listed on Kikipedia for non-focus areas. If you are submitting an event at a venue that is LGBTQ-centric (like a gay bar we do not yet have listed on the site) feel free to contact us directly, and we may be able to help you. Keep in mind, that Kikipedia is often not search-optimized for events in non-focus areas, and listing your event on here may not be very helpful in those areas.
What do you mean by "focus area"?
By focus area, we mean coverage areas (ie: cities) that we are focusing our efforts on. Currently, this includes Boston (our main focus area), Provincetown, Providence (Rhode Island), Worcester, and other parts of Massachusetts. We do this because Kikipedia was originally built for the Boston area specifically, and we like to stick to what we know and where we have connections and awareness. It's not that we don't care about other cities, it's just that we care about having time to touch grass and not burning out.
How does Kikipedia gather its content?
The content of Kikipedia is submitted by our users, or researched by our content manager and developer. Venues that were not submitted by users are typically gathered by searching the internet and social media platforms, and are only added once we are able to verify that they are still open and LGBTQ-centric. We continuously check the status of the venues listed on our site through automation to ensure that we our records are accurate. However, we are not omniscient, so things can slip through the cracks. In the past, content managers would gather events from our social media following, however due to scalability issues, we stopped doing that. We now encourage our users to submit their own events that that they may be organizing or participating in to ensure accuracy.
My bar/event is on your site, but I want its listing changed.
Feel free to Contact Us about it! Please be specific in your message so we know what you're talking about!
Will this site eventually be internationalized?
Unfortunately, no.
How can I help?
You are welcome to submit your local gay bars and events if we support coverage in your area. However, it is much more helpful if you get your local LGBTQ community event organizers and performers on board. We prefer (and may soon require) that submitted events are done so by parties affiliated with the event itself.
Will you promote my bar/club/event on your site and social media?
We are no longer on Facebook or Twitter, as they act against our interests. If you'd like us to share your events, you can tag us in them on Instagram or Bluesky. We only ask that you in turn promote our site, as free promotion works both ways. Please keep in mind that managing social media takes time and effort. We do not continuously post on social platforms as one may expect a typical local event aggregation account to, since our goal is to get people to use our site over big tech social media platforms.
What is your policy on AI-generated content?
We don't want it on our platform. It's slop, it's usually inaccurate, it isn't helpful to our users, and it reduces our search performance. If your flyer is AI-generated, we'll still accept it, but honestly take a moment to think about how that reflects on your event/brand.
Does Kikipedia offer sponsorships?
No. Unfortunately we are a no-profit, not a nonprofit. There are a few local events and orgs (ie: friends of Kikipedia) that our team does help support, however that is typically out of pocket.
Does Kikipedia scrape bar websites?
No. We've found scraping to be counterproductive, especially since many gay bars either do not have websites, have woefully out of date websites, or utilize Facebook (which we often times cannot access without an account) in lieu of a website. Given our policy about the use of Generative AI, we will not be using LLMs or Agents to add or maintain content on our site.
